- Description
Six gourds and children playing with the gourds are powerfully painted on Japanese paper with a bold layout. It is a rare style for Nakajima Kakō, who often painted detailed depictions on silk. This work is painted with skillful brush strokes, showing the wide range of techniques of him. “Six gourds” can also be pronounced “Mubyō”, which is the same sound as the Japanese words for “good health”. From its pronunciation, six gourds have been popular as a lucky charm since ancient times. The children playing innocently with the six gourds makes this work heartwarming and tasteful.
