- Description
Kyoto became the capital of Japan in the 8th century. It flourished as the center for Japanese politics, the economy and culture for some 1,100 years, until the capital was relocated to Tokyo in the mid-19th century. In Kyoto, many temples and shrines built during this long period still remain. There are 17 sites, including the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the Nijou Castle, that are designated as World Cultural Heritage Sites.
Arashiyama is a specific district of Kyoto and the Togetsu-kyou Bridge over the Katsura River (which runs through the central part of Arashiyama) is a symbol of Arashiyama. The area around the Togetsu-kyou Bridge attracts many tourists, particularly as it is a scenic spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.
Keiji Yamazaki spent his school days in Kyoto. Arashiyama is a place full of memories for him. When he was painting this work, I think he might’ve had a lot of fun. It is as if his nostalgic feelings linger in this painting.
