- Description
Hideki Miyamae is famous for framed colored paintings, but this work is a “kakejiku” (hanging scroll) painting, which is very rare. This painting style is quite different from that of a colored painting. “Iwa-enogu” (mineral pigments) are applied repeatedly to his colored paintings, but this painting is expressed with “sumi” (ink) as simply as possible. The simpler the expression, the more difficult becomes Japanese-style painting. A high level of drawing skill is necessary for the expression of the essential qualities of an object.
In this painting, the strong brushstroke gives magnificence to Mt. Fuji. The sky and the snow, which are expressed by the unpainted space, capture our imagination. He understands the profound significance of simplification very well. The pine trees might have grown obliquely because of strong winds. This depiction is very interesting.
