- Description
Nishiwaki Hanka is most popular for his landscape paintings, but he is also known for his flavorful portraits and animal paintings. This work features a monkey and its mother. The scene is heartwarming due to a mother feeding her baby monkey. The composition of the monkeys alone in the center of the picture never gives any sense of loneliness, perhaps thanks to the theme of such a love-filled work. Hanka may be trying to convey the universal love from mother to child in this work. The skillful use of sumi ink gradations to depict the soft hairs of the monkeys surely shows his mastery of the technique.
