- Description
Kamikōchi is a scenic area in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the southern part of the Hida Mountains in western Nagano Prefecture. It is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Japan to have been depicted by many painters since ancient times. It has usually been painted together with Taishō-ike pond at the foot of Kamikōchi.
This painting features Kamikōchi and Taishō-ike by Nakazawa Juhō, a master landscape painter, who is active in the Inten exhibition. The detailed depiction of the snow-covered mountain surface is noteworthy for its realism. Underneath the dense fog lies Taishō-ike with the withered trees famous there, which depiction is realistically capturing with skillful use of color. It can be said to be a powerful landscape painting, possibly making the audience wince.
