- Description
Mokujiki Shōnin was a Buddhist monk in the Edo period, who practiced Buddhism throughout the country without belonging to any particular temple or sect to create and dedicate many Buddhist sculptures in various places. This work was written by a modern Zen monk, Takahashi Yūhō, based on a famous poem left by this Mokujiki Shōnin. The poem says, “People’s minds are easily overwhelmed by anger, envy, and other negative emotions. It is important to always keep these minds calm and serene. Yes, as if you make your prickly heart round.” Takahashi Yūhō’s typeface in this work is also round, creating an interesting way for the kanji character “kokoro” being wrapped in a circle. The artist’s intention to convey the meaning of the poem in an easy to understand way is quite evident.
