- Description
“Amanohashidate” is a scenic spot in Miyazu Bay, near Miyazu City in Kyoto Prefecture. It is a 3.6 kilometer sand bridge formed over thousands of years and is now a beloved landmark in the northern part of Kyoto prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan. It has been crowned one of the three most beautiful spots in Japan, because when you peek at it from between your legs, it gives the illusion of the pine trees floating up into the air, due to the land and sky being reversed, causing it to be given such names as “Fisherman’s boat of Heaven” and “Bridge to Heaven.” Nature is the premier attraction in Miyazu Bay, but there is also deep culture and rich history to experience. There are several temples, shrines, and even natural hot springs adjacent to Amanohashidate.
Seika Tatsumoto is popular for his simple painting style with quick brushwork and minimal details. He is one of the few painters practicing the traditional painting technique which has developed in Kyoto. This is a painting of Amanohashidate. He expresses Amanohashidate indirectly with the slight depiction of the white waves. This kind of sensitivity is very cool. The painter stimulates our imagination by depicting the person on a boat. This is an unique work, in that we can almost hear the sound of the white waves.
