- Description
Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture is known as the largest lake in Japan. One of its representative scenic spots is Ukimidō, which stands like a protrusion in it. Many haiku poets, including Matsuo Bashō, and painters such as Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai have visited there. Numbers of such cultural figures have been captivated by the spectacular view of Lake Biwa, which is picturesque regardless of where to take, and when to take in spring, summer, autumn, and winter/morning, noon, and night. Accordingly, the view has served as the subject of many masterpieces. Such a spectacular view has never changed to still strike a chord with visitors today. This work is a masterpiece of landscape painter Kondō Nobuto’s skillful composition of Ukimidō. Once its floating structure in the lake seen, that is said to be never forgotten. Kondō Nobuto must have been captivated by such a scene as well to paint this picture.
