- Description
The symbolic meaning of the Japanese peony, considered the “king of flowers,” includes wealth, good fortune, and honor. In the “kakejiku” (hanging scroll) world, displaying the kakejiku of a peony painting is considered a form of the best hospitality you can give to a guest. Therefore, the kakejiku is often displayed in seasons other than just early summer.
Kinshi Nakatani, a professional Japanese-style painter, is well known for landscape paintings and “kachō-ga” (paintings of flowers and birds). In this work, a glamorous purple flower is painted by him. The sparrow has a majestic air as if it senses a strong rivalry with the king of flowers, and this expression is very interesting. There is something heart-warming about this work.
