- Description
Matsushima is a group of islands in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. There are some 260 tiny islands (“shima”) covered in pines (“matsu”) – hence the name – and it is ranked as one of the Three Views of Japan (“Nihon Sankei”.) The view of the moon on Matsushima is very beautiful. When Nihon Sankei is likened to “Setsu-ge-kka” (snow, moon and flower), snow is assigned to Amanohashidate, moon to Matsushima and flower to Miyajima deeming the autumnal leaf coloration as flower.
This work is painted with very bold composition and is very interesting. The moon depicted on the upper part, is worthy of special mention. The simply depicted moon changes this work into a night scene. People may be enjoying the view of the moon on the ship. This is an interesting part that captures our imagination.
