- Description
This is a calligraphic work of “寿 Ju” by Sakai Hōichi, who is popular for his tasteful calligraphy and paintings. “Ju” is a congratulatory word used to congratulate people on their good fortune, especially when it comes to longevity. This work features it with Sakai Hōichi’s vigorous lines. Among the lines that make up the Chinese character 寿, only the diagonal line is thinner and sharper than the other lines, which is quite interesting to signify a differentiation. The gentle horizontal line drawn above the word “Ju” is an ornament often used by Sakai Hōichi to give the entire work a sense of intonation. The ornamentation with gold and silver is also unique to allow this work to serve the result of the artist’s proficiency in both calligraphy and painting.
