- Description
Japanese people love cherry blossoms because they are not permanent but they give a feeling of “mujō” (transience). While Westerners seek beauty in “eternal beings,” many Japanese have a strong tendency to seek beauty in transforming things. The mujō and the view of mujō could be said to be the unique characteristics of the Japanese concept of beauty that has been growing over many years since the medieval era. This mujō is considered to be the fundamental ideology of Buddhism.
There is a beautiful cherry tree under the light of the full moon in this painting. The depictions of fluttering petals makes us imagine the future of the cherry blossoms. Therefore, we love them more deeply. The quiet colors of the entire piece give the exquisite refinement to the cherry blossoms. This work strikes a chord in the hearts of Japanese people. This is the reason that the paintings of cherry blossoms by Keiji Yamazaki are especially popular.
