- Description
“Hibikorekōjitsu” is a quite familiar Zen phrase in Japan. Its meaning says, “Do not regret the past, do not hope for the future but live this day firmly and proactively. Do what needs to be done and do not to do what needs not to be done. Do not let your own interests, or even your life/death, deceive you, make the most of the day given and reach a state of secure, independent living. You will then acquire the feeling that every day is the best day of your life.”
The calligraphy features this famous Zen phrase, written by Tomita Kokuhō, who previously was a chief priest at the Shōkōji temple of Myōshinji sect under Rinzai Buddhism. Written in a relaxed and powerful calligraphic style, this work soothes the audience’s mind to seemingly guide them to the mind-set indicated by the meaning of the words.
