- Description
Zen Buddhism is originally a sect of Buddhism, marking its long history in Japan to be deeply involved in a variety of art forms, which has thus gotten familiar even to non-religious people. Japanese Zen, in recent years, has become widely recognized abroad. It is a famous story that the late Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, was interested in zen.
Daruma Daishi (Bodhidharma), the founder of Zen Buddhism, also has a quite familiarity with Japanese people to have served as a popular subject for many painters since ancient times. This work is a portrait of Daruma Daishi by Nishiwaki Hanka, who is known for his richly expressive portraits. The imposing, stately portrayal of Daruma Daishi fills the picture plane with a powerful yet somehow gentle facial expression in a way to artistically entertain the audience under the expression of Nishiwaki Hanka’s sincere familiarity with Daruma Daishi.
