Order of Tanzaku-gake, Karuta-gake, and Shikishi-gake to Enhance the Beauty of Bonsai

Bonsai is a traditional Japanese “living art” that cultivates trees in small pots to express the grandeur of nature and the changing seasons.

Through our work with customers outside Japan, we came to learn that kakejiku (hanging scrolls) are often used as part of the display to enhance the beauty of bonsai.

We now receive orders from bonsai enthusiasts and businesses around the world.

In this article, we would like to share a recent order from a bonsai enthusiast.

Repeat Order from a Customer in the Netherlands

The customer we introduce here lives in the Netherlands and has been placing repeat orders with us since around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the years, we have built smooth communication and a solid understanding of their preferences.

The order details were as follows.

  • Tanzaku-gake: 5 designs, 5 pieces each (total 25 pieces)
  • Custom Tanzaku-gake: 1 piece using wave-pattern fabric
  • Karuta-gake: 5 designs, 4 pieces each (total 20 pieces)
  • Shikishi-gake: 8 pieces, all with different designs and colors
  • Shikishi: 50 sheets

Because we have worked with this customer for a long time, they often leave the fine details to us. However, this time they requested a custom tanzaku gake, so we held a detailed discussion to confirm the specifications.

The customer’s request was to use the wave-pattern fabric shown below for the top and bottom sections, and a plain blue-gray fabric in the center.

To make sure we were aligned on the design, we created a simple sketch and asked the customer to confirm it.

The customer plans to display a tanzaku featuring koi fish, and for that purpose they requested this design: wave-pattern fabric on the top and bottom, with a plain blue-gray fabric in the center.

Meeting Summary

We often handle large-quantity custom orders, and before starting production we always prepare meeting documents to confirm that there are no omissions in specifications or quantities.

The customer also told us that the drawings were very clear, which made us very happy. No matter where the customer is located, we believe it is important to communicate clearly and proceed carefully to avoid mistakes.

Production Completed

We completed the production of this order, which totaled more than 50 pieces. While checking the meeting documents, we crafted each item carefully, one by one.

After we informed the customer that production was complete, we shipped the package.

Words of Appreciation

After receiving the package, the customer sent us another wonderful message.

Dear Yuuichi-san, We recieved the parcel. And are very happy with the kakejiku. The all look very nice. And my wife is very happy with the new boards… She will use them very soon.. I think the customers will like the products very much. ありがとうございます ( hope i did write this the right way….)

From the fact that they made the effort to write “ありがとうございます” at the end, we could truly feel how happy they were.

Conclusion

We accept orders for tanzaku gake, shikishi gake, karuta gake, and more, from single pieces to large custom batches.

If you have any requests, whether for bonsai display use or for other purposes, please feel free to contact us.

Because aligning the image and expectations is crucial for custom items, we confirm the design by creating drawings and checking them together, and we maintain a system that allows customers to place orders with confidence.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
