Repeat Order from a U.S. Kakejiku Business: The Fusion of Bonsai Display and Hanging Scrolls

Expanding the Reach of Japanese Hanging Scrolls in Overseas Markets

Hanging scrolls (kakejiku) have long been a symbol of traditional Japanese aesthetics. However, in recent years, their demand has rapidly expanded beyond Japan, gaining attention from overseas businesses and artists.

One of the key factors behind this trend is the growing recognition of hanging scrolls not only as Japanese art but also as an essential element of interior decor and display aesthetics.

Responding to this demand, ART NOMURA has been actively providing traditional hanging scrolls while adapting them to contemporary display styles.

Following a successful initial order, a U.S.-based kakejiku business specializing in bonsai displays has placed a repeat order with us.

This business integrates hanging scrolls into their unique display style, incorporating elements of Japanese aesthetics and nature.

Their approach has been well-received in the North American market, earning them a loyal customer base.

Background of the Repeat Order: A Successful Display Concept

In the previous order, we delivered tanzaku-kake (hanging scrolls for tanzaku), shikishi-kake (hanging scrolls for shikishi), and a blank hanging scroll, which were used for set sales with bonsai and as part of gallery exhibitions. This innovative display concept received high praise from customers, leading to strong sales.

As a result, the company placed a repeat order to replenish their inventory.

This time, the order consisted of 20 tanzaku-kake, 25 sunshōan shikishi-kake, and 25 mame shikishi-kake.

The previous order’s blue wave-patterned tanzaku-kake proved particularly popular, leading to its continued selection.

Additionally, to enhance the natural integration of the scrolls, new designs incorporating green, teal, blue, and gold were added.

For shikishi-kake, the client requested colors that complement the natural beauty of bonsai, opting for more subdued tones and avoiding red or overly bright colors.

This reflects a growing demand for hanging scrolls that serve not only as decorative pieces but also as elements that enhance spatial aesthetics and ambiance.

What Overseas Businesses Seek in “User-Friendly” Hanging Scrolls

A key takeaway from this order is that overseas businesses are not just looking for hanging scrolls as art pieces but also as products that are easy to display and sell.

For instance, in bonsai displays, hanging scrolls serve as essential visual accents in Japanese gardens and indoor exhibitions. While maintaining traditional elegance, modern buyers seek practicality in size and color balance to ensure effortless integration into diverse spaces.

Our tanzaku-kake and shikishi-kake are designed with this in mind. By employing traditional mounting techniques while ensuring a compact and lightweight design, these scrolls offer a user-friendly display option even for overseas customers.

This balance between authenticity and practicality has been a major factor in securing repeat orders from businesses looking to cater to a broad clientele.

Seamless Production and Delivery: Ensuring Customer Satisfaction

In addition to the primary order, the client also requested an additional 50 pieces each of gold, silver, and white tanzaku (3-inch width).

With an upcoming event, they needed to complete numerous artworks within a month, making fast delivery essential.

Understanding this urgency, we carefully adjusted our production schedule to ensure a smooth workflow and timely shipment. As a result, all scrolls were delivered ahead of schedule, allowing the client to proceed with their event preparations without concern. The efficiency of our process was once again highly appreciated, reinforcing the trust established in the previous order.

The Expanding Potential of Hanging Scrolls: Beyond Art to Business Tools

This repeat order highlights a significant trend: in overseas markets, hanging scrolls are no longer perceived solely as fine art but also as functional display tools and commercially viable products.

When paired with bonsai or suiseki (viewing stones), hanging scrolls transcend their traditional role and become a crucial component of spatial presentation.

The client in this case has also begun utilizing hanging scrolls as frames to showcase original artwork, bundling them with custom artworks for unique product offerings.

This demonstrates that hanging scrolls are not confined to museums or tea rooms; rather, they are increasingly being adopted into modern lifestyle settings and commercial applications.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
