Bulk Order from a U.S. Kakejiku Business – Production of Tanzaku-kake, Shikishi-kake, and Blank Kakejiku

Kakejiku, a traditional Japanese cultural artifact, is highly valued not only in Japan but also overseas.

In recent years, we have seen a growing number of kakejiku production requests from international businesses, and our company has had the opportunity to work with various businesses in the U.S., Europe, and other regions.

This time, we received a large order of tanzaku-kake, shikishi-kake, shikishi paper, and blank kakejiku from a long-established kakejiku business in the U.S.

It was our first transaction with this customer, but they highly valued our quality and service, and this became a significant project that opened the door for a long-term business relationship.

In this article, we will detail our communication with this U.S.-based business and how we successfully fulfilled their needs.

Customer Profile and Inquiry Background

The customer is a business in the U.S. that has been handling kakejiku for many years.

They have extensive experience in the industry and a deep appreciation for Japanese art, seeking high-quality kakejiku products from a reliable Japanese supplier.

The customer reached out to us via our website, expressing their interest in acquiring high-quality kakejiku produced with traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Their specific requests included a bulk order of tanzaku-kake and shikishi-kake, purchasing shikishi paper, and producing a blank kakejiku for a spider painting.

Since our company provides not only kakejiku mounting services for individual customers but also large-scale orders and custom production for businesses, we assured the customer that we could accommodate their detailed specifications.

As a result, the order was officially placed, and we began the production of a large number of tanzaku-kake, shikishi-kake, and a custom blank kakejiku.

Order Details and Key Considerations

After extensive communication, the final confirmed order included a diverse range of items:

Tanzaku-kake (Hanging Scrolls for Tanzaku)

・Adjusted to suit the customer’s sales needs
・Various colors of silk fabric used

Shikishi-kake (Hanging Scrolls for Shōshikishi Paper)

・Scrolls for smaller-sized shikishi

Shikishi Paper

・Ordered in multiple sizes: shōshikishi, sunshōan shikishi, and mame shikishi

Custom Blank Kakejiku for a Spider Painting

・Used gray silk fabric based on the customer’s request

・Carefully selected washi paper color through a thorough consultation process

Key Considerations
This order required flexibility in customization to match the business needs of the customer. Additionally, we had to optimize the delivery schedule to ensure that items arrived in time for the customer’s planned events and sales activities.

To meet these requirements, we carefully coordinated the shipping schedule and production timeline, ensuring that everything was delivered at the right time without delays.

Delivery Process and Customer Feedback

Since the delivery timing was crucial to the customer’s business operations, we took extra care in planning the shipment.

Shikishi Paper Was Shipped First

Since the customer needed the shikishi papers to begin their artwork production, we prioritized shipping these items before the tanzaku-kake and shikishi-kake.

Tanzaku-kake and Shikishi-kake Were Shipped in Phases

Part of the order was shipped early to meet the customer’s event schedule.

The remaining products were shipped later in line with their planned sales schedule.

Custom Blank Kakejiku Was Produced and Shipped with Priority

Since this was a unique and essential item for the customer’s business, we ensured it was manufactured with utmost priority.
The customer was delighted with the result and sent us an immediate response, stating, “It’s perfect!! I’ll paint the spider tomorrow and send you a photo!”

Customer’s Artwork and Feedback

The customer created a spider painting on the custom blank kakejiku, which was a special order from their client. They were particularly pleased with how the pattern of the mounting fabric resembled a spider’s web, enhancing the aesthetic and meaning of the artwork.

Since all items were delivered ahead of schedule, the customer was highly satisfied.

This successful transaction helped establish a strong trust between us, and they expressed their interest in placing further orders in the future.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
