Heartwarming Feedback from Our Overseas Customer

We are a kakejiku (hanging scroll) maker with a history of over 50 years. Over the years, many customers have chosen our services and shared their thoughts and impressions with us. We are always grateful, because it is thanks to these customers that we have been able to continue our work for such a long time.

In recent years, we have had more and more customers from overseas, and we have been fortunate to receive many kind words from them as well. Among these, there are some comments that are especially memorable and truly encouraging for us.

In this article, we would like to introduce a wonderful review from Pedro-san, a customer who visited us from Portugal.

Our First Visitor from Portugal

We have welcomed many customers from all over the world, but Pedro-san was actually our very first customer from Portugal.

Portugal is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southern Europe, sharing a border with Spain. It is also well known as a strong football nation, and Cristiano Ronaldo is of course a very famous player from there.

It is a curious thing: once we have a chance to serve a customer and build a connection with them, we naturally start wondering,

“What kind of country did they come from?” “What kind of culture do they have?”

and we often find ourselves wanting to travel there someday.

Gifts for Two Respected Seniors

Pedro-san was traveling in Japan and visited our shop to look for kakejiku as gifts for two of his seniors back home.

Within a limited budget, he carefully examined many scrolls, trying to find pieces that would truly suit each person’s taste. Seeing his sincerity, our staff did their best to propose works that matched his preferences.

In the end, he chose the following two scrolls:

  • A color landscape scroll with a calm, tranquil atmosphere
  • A scroll depicting Taishō Pond in Kamikōchi

Both works convey the quiet beauty and refreshing feeling of nature, and we felt that his seniors would surely be pleased with these choices.

Review

Pedro-san kindly left us the following heartwarming review about his experience at our shop:

Wonderful shop with beautiful, high-quality artworks. The staff were incredibly kind, patient, and helpful — they spent over two and a half hours showing me many pieces that matched my tastes and preferences. The lady assisting me spoke very good English, which made it much easier to understand my ideias regarding what I was looking for. Overall, a fantastic place for anyone who appreciates art. I’m really happy with my choices and look forward to coming back to Japan one day to bring home another special piece that reminds me of this country.

Among his words, we were especially touched by his comment that our shop is “a fantastic place for anyone who appreciates art.”

In Japan, unfortunately, hanging scrolls are not as familiar as they once were, and we do not always have many opportunities to feel that our work is widely appreciated.

That is why receiving such feedback from an overseas customer made us realise once again that:

Even from a global perspective, there are still people who find genuine value in our kakejiku and in the way we serve our customers.

This has become a great source of motivation for us.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
