New-Style Nichiren Mandala Hanging Scroll Production

At ART NOMURA, we have a valued client in South Africa who has been commissioning us to produce Nichiren Mandala hanging scrolls for many years. Although each order is for a Nichiren Mandala hanging scroll, the calligraphy content, dimensions, and mounting details always differ—meaning almost every commission is custom-made. Our ability to accommodate these detailed customizations is our greatest strength.
Client Requests
This time, the client requested the following changes:
- ・Outer mounting fabric: woven with silver threads
- ・Inner mounting fabric: red fabric
- ・Fine vertical stripes: applied to the inner red fabric
Fabric Selection and Final Choice
After reviewing several fabric samples, the client selected:
- ・A silver-threaded fabric for the outer section, offering depth and gravitas
- ・A vivid red fabric for the inner section

The contrast between the understated silver and the vibrant red creates a striking visual effect.
Benefits of the “Mawashi” Mounting Technique
The client requested fine vertical stripes applied to the inner red fabric so that the red material encircles the Nichiren Mandala itself—a technique called “mawashi” in Japanese. This creates a vivid red border between the artwork and the outer silver mounting, making the mandala appear to float and imparting a more refined presence. In the world of scroll mounting, this is regarded as a cut above in elegance.
Completion
The finished hanging scroll highlights how the red fabric in the mawashi mounting frames the artwork, making it stand out beautifully.

We are delighted to report that the client expressed great satisfaction with the final result.
We at ART NOMURA produce a wide variety of Nichiren Mandala hanging scrolls. If you have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
