A Memorable Souvenir from Japan – Why Foreign Visitors Choose “Kakejiku” (Hanging Scrolls)

As the number of international visitors to Japan increases each year, we are hearing more and more people say, “I want to take something meaningful home,” or “I’m looking for a truly special gift.” Among such travelers, Japanese hanging scrolls – known as “kakejiku” – are quietly gaining popularity as a unique form of traditional art.

A Refreshing Journey to Japan – A Visit from Nick-san

This time, we had the pleasure of welcoming Nick-san, a jewelry designer from Texas, USA.

A true professional, he handles everything from design and production to sales, and his client list includes many celebrities.

His purpose for visiting Japan was simple: to take a full break from work and refresh both body and mind. During his two-week stay at Maiko Villa (a well-known hotel nearby), he enjoyed golf and reconnecting with friends. One day, he stopped by our gallery – a visit that led to a memorable encounter.

Red Fuji and Autumn Grass – When Art Speaks to the Heart

As Nick-san carefully browsed through our collection, he was immediately drawn to a hanging scroll depicting “Red Fuji.” The powerful, majestic image of Mount Fuji glowing in the morning sun resonated with Nick-san’s own energetic and positive spirit. Without hesitation, he said, “This is the one for me,” and made the purchase – a perfect match between artwork and owner.

He also chose a second scroll, “Autumn Grass,” as a gift for his mother. A cat lover, she is the recipient of Nick-san’s thoughtful collection of feline-themed items from around the world. His warmth and kindness shone through in this heartfelt choice.

Hanging Scrolls Make Ideal Gifts for Loved Ones

For those looking to give a truly Japanese gift to their family or friends, hanging scrolls are an excellent option. Compact and easy to display, they bring tranquility and elegance to any space. More than just decoration, they carry the spiritual essence of Japanese culture, making them a deeply meaningful gift.

The History of Kakejiku – A Japanese Art Form Evolved from China

Hanging scrolls originally came to Japan from China as tools for displaying Buddhist paintings during rituals. However, once in Japan, they evolved in unique and remarkable ways.

During the Muromachi period, many of the uniquely Japanese styles that we now associate with “wayō” (Japanese-style aesthetics) began to take shape—not only in architecture such as the washitsu (Japanese room), but also in interior arts, rituals, and design sensibilities.
Along with this cultural evolution, the styles and presentation methods of kakejiku (hanging scrolls) were also refined and systematized.

Around the same time, the practice of tea ceremony became widespread, and kakejiku began to play an essential role in expressing seasonal or philosophical themes during tea gatherings.

Through centuries of aesthetic development, kakejiku have become a refined and uniquely Japanese form of art. As such, they make ideal souvenirs – beautiful objects that allow the owner to revisit their memories of Japan time and again.

Why More and More International Visitors Are Choosing Kakejiku

In recent years, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of overseas customers visiting our gallery specifically to purchase kakejiku. These are people deeply moved by Japanese culture and aesthetics – travelers who seek more than sightseeing, and want to bring home something lasting and heartfelt.

Nick-san was one of those thoughtful guests. After his visit, he kindly left us the following review:

Impeccable art gallery
Outstanding customer service! I am so impressed with Art Nomura and couldn’t be happier. Tomoko and Yuichi were a pleasure to work with. I purchased a hanging scroll for my mother, and one for my jewelry store in Texas, USA. I highly recommend you coming here.

Words like these truly encourage and inspire our team.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
