Scroll Repair Request from Australia: Remounting with Unique Roller Ends

This time, we received a request from a long-time customer residing in Australia to restore a kakejiku (hanging scroll) featuring a black bull.

The kakejiku had severe creases throughout, which were hindering its aesthetic value.

This customer has entrusted us with the repair and remounting of scrolls multiple times in the past, and once again has chosen us for the restoration of this precious scroll.

We are extremely pleased that the customer has once again placed his trust in our company and entrusted us with this work.

Unique Choice of Roller Ends

The distinctive feature of this request was the customer’s desire for unique, non-standard roller ends. The customer seemed to want something a bit different from the usual design.

The customer provided an design image of his desired roller end design, and we proposed several options available in our collection that would fit his unique vision.

Customer’s Request Roller Ends

From these options, the customer chose the one that most closely matched his image, and we proceeded with the remounting using that roller end.

Our Proposed Roller Ends

Our ability to source and offer a variety of less common, pre-made roller ends to meet individual requests is one of our strengths.

Adjustments in Fabric Selection

The customer also had special preferences for the fabric, opting for a dark and deep-colored plain fabric.

However, such dark fabrics do not usually look best for kakejiku displayed in Japanese tokonoma (alcoves), and therefore they are not in high demand, resulting in limited stock.

After several discussions with the customer, we suggested a fabric that, while respecting his preference, would also suit traditional Japanese aesthetics. Eventually, we reached a mutual agreement.

This customer had a strong preference for a particular type of fabric, but we had to honestly explain that the current market situation in Japan makes it challenging to fulfill all requests due to factors such as production discontinuation and rising costs. Ultimately, the customer understood these circumstances.

We also explained that trying to fulfill all his wishes could significantly impact the budget, which was likely not what the customer wanted.

The fabric selected by the customer.

Optional Service for Artwork Protection

Given the significant damage to the kakejiku, we proposed an optional “futomaki paulownia box” to ensure safer storage and display. The futomaki paulownia box is an ideal choice for preserving valuable or restored works, providing long-term protection.

This optional service is one of our unique offerings to help protect our customers’ valuable artworks.

Repair Results and Customer Satisfaction

The repair and remounting of the kakejiku were successfully completed. The severe creases were beautifully restored, no longer hindering its display.

The chosen roller end also looks very elegant.

After we shipped the kakejiku to the customer, he sent us the following comment:

Dear Mr. Nomura,
Just a quick note to let you know my kakejiku has arrived safely.
Thankyou to you and your team for doing such a marvellous restoration and remounting. The results are wonderful.
Best regards always.

These warm words from our customer are the greatest encouragement for us, driving us to continue meeting his expectations.

We also received photos of the kakejiku displayed at the customer’s home. Seeing the kakejiku beautifully displayed at a setting different from Japan was truly exciting, and we are very pleased with how it turned out.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
