Custom Kakejiku Order from Switzerland
At Nomura Art, we often have the opportunity to create custom kakejiku based on our clients’ requests.
These are articles about the custom-made hanging scrolls we made at the request of a customer from the UK.
Recently, we received an order from a customer in Switzerland.
The request was to create a kakejiku featuring the word “Freedom” (自由) in calligraphy, styled for Buddhist ceremonies.
The dimensions were specified to be 400mm in width and 1000mm in height.
Our Swiss customer, deeply fascinated by Japanese culture, was eager to have a piece of Japanese art in their home in the form of a traditional hanging scroll.
We started by creating a concept image to ensure we fully understood the customer’s vision.
This initial step is crucial, especially when working on custom orders with clients from different cultures and languages.
After confirming the design, we requested one of our contracted calligraphers to produce the piece.
The customer was very pleased with the finished calligraphy, so we moved on to the next important step—selecting the fabric for the mounting.
The fabric plays a key role in determining the overall aesthetic of the kakejiku. We provided several fabric samples, each with a unique texture and color, allowing the customer to choose the combination that best captured their vision.
He ultimately chose a combination of a solemn outer fabric and a lustrous inner one—perfectly highlighting the dynamism of the calligraphy.
Once the fabric selection was finalized, it was time for our artisans to take over. Each step of the process was meticulously executed, from aligning and stretching the fabrics to ensure no creases formed, to carefully cutting and mounting them to achieve perfect balance and harmony. Every detail mattered in bringing this kakejiku to life.
The finished kakejiku featured a powerful combination of the dynamic calligraphy and the sophisticated fabric, creating a stunning work of art.
When it safely arrived at the customer’s home in Switzerland, they shared their heartfelt appreciation:
Dear Mr. Nomura
I just opened the box to view the real Kakejiku. It is very precise and the fabric and materials are very nice. Thank you for putting your whole attention to producing this Kakejiku. I appreciate it very much. Thank you. I wish you all the best!
His gratitude was deeply touching and served as a reminder that our work goes beyond merely creating objects—it connects with the hearts of our customers.
At Nomura Art, we are committed to cherishing each client’s vision and transforming it into something tangible and beautiful. If you’re inspired to have your own custom kakejiku, we would be honored to help make your vision a reality.
