Eternalize Your Journey: Shikoku 88 Pilgrimage Kakejiku Mounting Service

The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage is a traditional Japanese journey that soothes the soul. Transforming this profound experience into a lasting form is gaining attention, and kakejiku (hanging scroll) mounting has become an ideal way to do so.

At our company, we specialize in mounting nōkyō-jiku scrolls—collected temple stamps from the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage—into beautifully crafted kakejiku hanging scrolls.

The Allure of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage

The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage is one of Japan’s most significant Buddhist cultural traditions, with a long history.

Pilgrims visit 88 temples associated with Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai), tracing his footsteps and learning from his teachings. Known as “o-henro-san,” these pilgrims undertake the journey with the spirit of “Dōgyō Ninin” (two traveling together), walking alongside Kūkai in a spiritual sense.

The full journey spans approximately 1,200 kilometers.

Surrounded by Shikoku’s stunning natural beauty, pilgrims reflect on their inner selves and seek spiritual growth as they travel.

In recent years, the pilgrimage has drawn not only Japanese but also many international visitors.

The pilgrimage is recognized not as mere sightseeing but as a chance for spiritual purification and healing.

The serene and solemn atmosphere at each temple allows pilgrims to escape the bustle of daily life and find inner peace.

Completing the pilgrimage brings a profound sense of accomplishment, marking a turning point in many pilgrims’ lives.

To commemorate this special experience, more and more international pilgrims are choosing to mount their nōkyō-jiku (temple stamp collections) into kakejiku scrolls.

Kakejiku offers a tangible way to preserve the memories of the pilgrimage, serving as a daily reminder of the inspiration and growth achieved during the journey.

The Significance of Mounting a Completed Nōkyō-jiku into a Kakejiku

The pilgrimage is a deeply fulfilling journey, both mentally and physically, and many pilgrims wish to commemorate their experience in a tangible way after completing it.

Throughout the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, the temple stamps (goshuin) collected at each temple serve as proof of this journey.

These goshuin are symbolic of the pilgrim’s path and personal growth, holding deep sentimental value.

For those who wish to preserve these invaluable goshuin in a special form, mounting them into a kakejiku scroll is an ideal choice.

Mounting the nōkyō-jiku into a kakejiku transforms it into a meaningful art piece. As a traditional Japanese art form, kakejiku is a method used to elegantly mount and display calligraphy, paintings, and temple stamps (goshuin).

This allows you to revisit your pilgrimage memories anytime and share the profound experiences with your family and friends.

Furthermore, when mounted as a kakejiku, the goshuin transforms into an art piece that enhances the atmosphere of spaces like entryways or living rooms. It creates a sense of elegance, inviting visitors to experience the spirituality of the pilgrimage and the profound depth of Japanese culture.

For international pilgrims in particular, preserving their journey in the form of a kakejiku offers a unique way to connect with Japanese traditions and culture.

It allows them to incorporate the essence of this heritage into their daily lives, making it a truly captivating and meaningful choice.

The Process of Mounting a Kakejiku Scroll

Pilgrims who request Shikoku 88 kakejiku mounting at our company often visit us in person after completing their pilgrimage. Some even plan their trip schedules around a visit to our shop, contacting us before departure to secure an appointment.

During their visit, customers often share heartfelt stories about their pilgrimage—the challenges they overcame, the connections they felt at each temple, and the peace they found within themselves. Together, we select the perfect fabric for their nōkyō-jiku, ensuring that every choice reflects the emotional and spiritual journey they experienced. We are honored that many consider this interaction a cherished part of their pilgrimage experience.

We offer 19 standard fabric patterns for Shikoku 88 kakejiku, and we can accommodate custom requests as well.

Once the fabric is chosen, we proceed with the mounting process, which typically takes 2–3 months. Expedited requests can also be arranged.

Our pricing varies depending on the fabric and design, generally ranging from tens of thousands of yen to hundreds of thousands of yen.

Once completed, the kakejiku is carefully packaged and shipped to the designated address overseas.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
