Request for Repair of an Old Hanging Scroll from a Customer Residing in the United States
We receive various inquiries about hanging scrolls from all around the world. We are also very often asked to repair damaged hanging scrolls, and we are happy to have the opportunity to be of service.
In this article, we would like to share an episode where we received a request from a female customer residing in the United States to repair her hanging scroll.
Here is the hanging scroll. The entire hanging scroll is creased.
We decided to clean the entire piece, as there was some staining occurring throughout.
The scroll depicts a figure with three faces and six arms, which suggests that it might be an image of Ashura, although we couldn’t be certain.
Repair Process
We discussed the details of the repair with the customer and allowed her to select the fabric. The general flow of the re-mounting operation was as follows:
Color Fixing (Settling the paint by applying chemical agent)
↓
Dismantling of Kakejiku (Removing old fabrics, roller rod, etc.)
↓
Removal of Old Backing Paper (Peeling off the old backing paper from the back of the main work)
↓
Cleaning (Cleaning the main work as best as possible by using chemical agent)
↓
Remounting (Remounting in kakejiku with the fabric which the customer has chosen)
Completion of the Repair and Remounting
The repair and remounting of the hanging scroll have been successfully completed.
The creases that had occurred throughout have been resolved, giving it a flat appearance and making it easier to appreciate.
The dirt that had occurred throughout the entire area was also cleaned, restoring its original beauty.
The figure of Ashura? has been revived with a lively and dynamic appearance.
