Request for Bespoke Tanzaku-Kake from a German Japanese‐Style Painter

Kakejiku designed for exhibiting tanzaku/an artistic paper board is called ‘Tanzaku-kake’ whose strings attached to its main part are utilized for fixing a tanzaku. The kakejiku has a feature which is to enable you to admire multiple tanzakus on the single hanging scroll by changing those pieces.

We take an order for bespoke tanzaku-kake and ever since we introduced this offer on an article, the influx of requests for the work has been being received from all over the globe.

Here is the article.

The topic this time is about one of those orders which was from Germany.

The customer is a Japanese-style painter portraying her work on a tanzaku or a shikishi/a square paperboard to sell after fixing them onto either a tanzaku-kake or shikishi-kake.

According to the customer, although she was happy with finishing her pieces with an off-the-peg tanzaku-kake or shikishi-kake at an earlier time, the idea of using these kakejikus which are the best match with her works started growing on her and then she spotted us through her search for a firm offering bespoke orders.

Our original plan was having the consultation in person at our shop as she was supposed to visit Japan for other reason in April, 2020 but it was cancelled due to covid -19 pandemic and we proceeded the order online.

The picture below shows all tanzaku-kakes we made. We were in charge of jaw-dropping 36 orders in total… The view of them all lined up is just magnificent isn’t it?

We designed these kakejikus with variety of styles hoping they can enhance artworks of the customer.

Straight after we made those kakejikus, we sent them to the customer then we found that she kindly posted the images on her Instagram, the completed kakejikus with her works being fitted.

The customer appears to be pleased and that makes me feel delightful.

As well as requests for off-the-peg tanzaku-kakejikus, we take bespoke orders for the kakejiku of this kind too like the episode this time.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
