- Description
A pure white mist rising from a steep valley. Trees rigorously taking root in the rugged rock walls. And a boat crossing the river in the mist. In this work, a Japanese painter, Fujiwara Hōsen, depicts the majestic workings of nature in the deep mountains and valleys with his magnificent brushstrokes. He was especially good at portraying the mist. As might be expected of him, the composition was calculated precisely so that both the waterfall flowing down naturally to the river and the boat crossing the river can be viewed seamlessly. Expressing beautifully the feeling of vitality that pulsates incessantly in the silence of a distant land, with rough but strong brushwork, it is worthy to be called a masterpiece.
