New Custom-Made Hanging Scroll Order from Italian Customer

We have received a new order from our Italian customer who has been using our services for some time. We have been in frequent communication with this customer, creating shikishi-gake and tanzaku-gake scrolls.

This time, we once again received a special request that reflects the customer’s strong preferences.

3 Types of Hanging Scrolls, Each with Unique Features

This order consists of three different specifications of hanging scrolls. Each one is a true custom-made piece that fuses the customer’s ideas with our techniques.

  • Type A:A hanging scroll 500mm wide and 900mm high, with a special design that can display two different shikishi. This style of hanging scroll is very rare and designed to make the customer’s collection stand out. As with the customer’s previous order, we aimed for a unified finish by creating it with the same layout.
  • Type B: 270mm wide and 800mm high, this hanging scroll is designed to display small shikishi and tanzaku. This size is very convenient as it can be used even in narrow spaces.
  • Type C: A slim design 140mm wide and 800mm high, specialized for displaying a single tanzaku. The impactful fabric enhances the charm of the tanzaku.

Fabric Selection and Attention to Detail

The selection of fabric for the hanging scrolls is also an important process for the customer. We proposed multiple fabric options, from which the customer chose their favorite. This time too, we carefully selected from various fabrics and were able to incorporate the optimal fabric for each type of hanging scroll.

Completion of Shikishi-gake and Tanzaku-gake Scrolls

Here are the completed custom-ordered shikishi-gake and tanzaku-gake hanging scrolls. These are special scrolls made with carefully selected fabrics.

Through this hanging scroll production, we received words of high satisfaction from the customer, and she also consulted us about a large order for next time.

She mentioned wanting to place a new order for 30-50 pieces next time, which makes us very happy and also gives us a sense of responsibility.

We will continue to strive as a team to meet our customer’s trust.

Summary

Our company is dedicated to spreading the traditional Japanese culture of hanging scrolls to the world, putting our heart into each order we receive.

Our long-standing relationship with this Italian customer is one of the fruits of these efforts.

We value communication with our customers throughout all processes, including hanging scroll design and fabric selection, to deliver a special piece unique to each customer.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
