The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry, on December 22, 2015, picked Kobe beef and six other items as the first set of local food brands to be certified for protection under the nation’s new law on Japan Geographical Indication, or GI. The state-led certification system is intended to shore up the economies of production areas for selected items. Designated products are given the GI trademark. Producers in other areas are banned from using brand names trademarked under the system, with unauthorized use subject to penalties.

“The government aims to promote GI registrations to boost demand for high-quality agricultural, forestry and fisheries products both at home and abroad,” Agriculture Minister Hiroshi Moriyama told a press conference.

The ministry is focusing on the rules relating GI to the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) agreement, and is making a new system by legal reform for Japan and other countries to protect local brand food products. For example, it is supposed that Japan will protect Kobe beef and America will do the same for the Idaho potato. Japan will negotiate the GI agreement with TPP members and exchange a list of products protected by GI on the Economic Partnership Agreement with the EU.

My Beloved Kobe

As a local, I’m so happy to hear about the certification because I hope that Kobe will become more famous around the world.

Kobe is famous as a fashionable and sophisticated city. Among the people in Tokyo, Kobe is recognized as a fashionable city. Among the Kansai region, Kobe also has a unique presence, although there are many cities in the region which have unique cultures, such as Kyoto and Osaka. That’s what I love about and take pride in. I hope that Kobe will become more well-known and the number of people from other countries will increase. Even if only a handful of people know our company in Kobe and are interested in kakejiku(hanging scrolls), our company’s product, it will make me happy. It’s important to increase opportunities for them to learn about kakejiku.

Recommended Kobe Beef

This time I’d like to introduce recommended Kobe beef restaurants by the locals. I hope this article will be helpful for people from other countries to select Kobe beef restaurants while visiting Kobe. Please refer to the link below for details regarding Kobe beef.

4 Major Kobe Beef Restaurants

In Kobe there are 4 major Kobe beef restaurants: MisonoMouriya, Bifuteki no Kawamura(Bifteck Kawamura) and Kobe Beef Steak Ishida. Although they are all expensive restaurants, they will not let you down. The average amount of money we plan to spend on each Kobe beef course is about over 10,000 yen, so these restaurants are often used for receptions too. Some of them have reasonable lunch courses of Kobe beef.

Misono Kobe

Misono restaurant was established in 1945. The serving manner, in which a chef cooks steak and others on the teppan (iron plate), and serves them to the customer across the counter, was originated in 1945, getting idea from sushi restaurants by a stake restaurant Misono. As the service of this teppanyaki steak restaurant, which includes the dazzling performance, is favored by people from other countries rather than Japanese. Misono has become a famous sight-seeing place for people visiting Japan. The main restaurant is in Kobe and its branches are located in Osaka, Kyoto, Shinjuku, and Ginza.

Misono Kobe head restaurant has started to serve a Halal Kobe Beef course for Muslim recently. Please kindly check the below link.

Mouriya

Mouriya is a long standing restaurant founded in 1885. The restaurant recommends that we eat Kobe beef first with only salt to best enjoy the high quality of the meat. It has four locations: the main branch in Sannomiya, and three side branches (Sannomiya, Royal Mouriya and Dining Mouriya). Though all 4 restaurants are very close, each has its own characteristics.

The head restaurant was originally founded in 1885. Sannomiya branch restaurant was the second. There is no great difference of these restaurants’ atmosphere. Sannomiya branch and Royal Mouriya branch are in a same building; Sannomiya branch is on the third floor and Royal Mouriya branch is on the second floor. Royal Mouriya branch is a higher quality restaurant than the others. It has some private rooms  and 100 kinds of wines. There is a rule that children under age 6 are prohibited to enter the restaurant. The Dining Mouriya branch is a new restaurant that was opened in 2014, and offers a more casual atmosphere than the others. There is a wide variety of liquor. The closing time is later than the others and the price is reasonable.

Their holidays differ depending on the restaurants.

Ishida Kobe Beef Steak

Ishidaya, which serves Kobe beef, has various types of restaurants: yakiniku(grilled meat), sukiyaki (sweet soy sauce beef hot pot) and shabu-shabu(beef hot pot), and steakhouse. We can choose them properly, depending on our usage.

Ishida Kobe Beef is a steakhouse run by Ishidaya. It is a teppanyaki style restaurant just like the aforementioned Mouriya and Bifuteki no Kawamura. Teppanyaki is a style of Japanese cuisine that uses an iron griddle to cook food. Modern teppanyaki grills are typically propane-heated flat surface grills, and are widely used to cook food in front of restaurant guests. It has three locations: the main branch in Sannomiya, and two side branches at Sannomiya and Kitanozaka. They all have sophisticated interiors adopting elements of a Japanese style room. The branch at Kitanozaka recently opened,  and is suited to dates and receptions. We can enjoy a meal more.

Our Feelings For Kakejiku

The Japanese people have long set a high value on aesthetic senses since ancient times. As a result, the
peculiar culture which is not seen in other countries blossomed and many aspects of the modern Japanese
culture come from it. Parts of Japanese culture has been introduced to people in other countries recently,
so the number of people from other countries who are interested in Japanese culture has been increasing.
However, the Japanese aesthetic senses, which are the bases of Japanese culture, have been nurtured
through a long history, intertwining various elements intricately, such as climate, geographical features,
religion, customs and so on. Therefore, they are very difficult to understand not only for people from other
countries, but even for the Japanese people. I think the best tool which conveys these difficult senses
understandably is a “kakejiku.”
The kakejiku (a hanging scroll; a work of calligraphy or a painting which is mounted and hung in an
alcove or on a wall) is a traditional Japanese art. It's no exaggeration to say that paintings are what
express aesthetic senses at all times and places. The kakejiku is an art which expresses the Japanese
aesthetic senses. The kakejiku has long been used in traditional Japanese events, daily life and so on since
ancient times. As a result, there are various customs of kakejiku in Japan; kakejiku and the life of the
Japanese are closely related. We can see Japanese values through kakejiku.
The kakejiku is a cultural tradition which the Japanese people should be proud of. However, many people
in other countries don't know much about it because it hasn't been showcased as much. This is why I
decided to try to introduce it. The kakejiku world is very interesting and beautiful. We want not only the
Japanese, but also many people from other countries to know and enjoy it. I hope that many people will
love kakejiku someday.
