- Description
Usui Hiroki is an artist who learned Western paintings along with Japanese paintings. The influence of Western paintings can be seen in many parts of his Japanese paintings. This work depicts Kyoto’s Tōji Temple in a moonlit night with fantastic colors. The use of vivid blue color, just like those used in Western paintings, is rare for a Japanese hanging scroll painting. The full moon that is clearly depicted equally provides a fresh impression. The pagoda shining in the moonlight is also skillfully expressed with gold color. This is a masterpiece that shows the high level of Usui Hiroki’s painting skill.
