- Description
This is a painting of hydrangea by Oguri Senshū, who was good at tasteful haiga, a painting style of simple depiction and haiku. The phrase in the screen is a famous haiku by Matsuo Bashō, a master of haiku in the Edo period. The content of the haiku is as follows.
“Spring is over, and the bushes in the small garden are buried in weeds. But the hydrangea in bloom makes the garden splendid again.”
In this work, Oguri Senshū drew the scene of this haiku with light brushstrokes, where you can feel the sharp sensibility of Matsuo Bashō. It is like praise for the charm of the hydrangea that blooms beautifully during the rainy season.
