- Description
According to a Chinese legend, a carp swam upstream, leaped the waterfalls of the Yellow River at the Dragon Gate, and then was transformed into a dragon. From this mythology, a carp climbing up a waterfall has been favored from ancient times as a subject of the picture. Traditionally, only black carps had been painted in many cases. However recently, in more and more paintings, colored carps are seen leaping together with black ones.
In this work, a Japanese painter, Shimizu Hideo, using refreshing colors, beautifully brought together a couple of carps climbing up a waterfall with great vigor. The blue of the waterfall, the black of a black carp, the red of a colored carp, and the white of splash are all arranged in a perfect balance of color and delight viewer’s eyes.
